Plum Cares: Ride the Wave of Positivity • 2017 Promote Positivity Leotard Design Contest Winner Leo Released
Plum Practicewear announces the launch of a new, limited-edition leotard, “Storm Surfer,” as part of their Plum Cares Collection. The Plum Cares Collection is engrained with the mission of giving back to the gymnastics community through speciality products where a portion of the proceeds are allocated toward scholarships and philanthropic organizations.
The winner of the 2017 Promote Positivity Leotard Design Contest, Kyla Dooley of Delta, British Columbia, designed the “Storm Surfer” leotard with the intention of giving back to the gymnastics community through a powerful, positive message. This one-of-a-kind leotard was designed by the 14-year-old Canadian gymnast as her entry for Plum’s 1st annual contest which launched in October 2017. The objective of the contest was to allow Plum’s community to illustrate what “positivity” means to them and translate their unique perspectives into a beautifully designed leotard. With a template provided, girls from across the country, and beyond, submitted designs.
“Choosing one winner, amongst the 165 submissions that we received, was not an easy task for the Plum Practicewear team.” states Lauren Massamillo, Plum Practicewear’s Marketing Coordinator. “Kyla’s design really stood out to us not only for the artistry and design, but for the strong message behind the design. It was very Plum.”
“Storm Surfer portrays the skill of making the best outcome of any situation!” Kyla Dooley says when describing the inspiration behind her design.“It’s all about riding the wave of positivity, as they say!”
Kyla, who is a member of Delta Gymnastics, feels that positivity is seeing the light in any situation no matter how dark things get. She enjoys spreading positivity by encouraging her peers to pursue their goals and supporting them with reinforcement and positive feedback.
The young Canadian is certainly no stranger to art and design. Her dreams after high school are to pursue a career in the general field of fine arts, as art is one of her greatest passions outside of gymnastics. The teen skillfully combined a sleek, black front and nautical-inspired print reminiscent of famous Japanese wave artist, Hokusai, to create her special Plum Flip Side leotard. She made her final details on the leo by incorporating a graphic, linear wave with “Storm Surfer” printed on the front to solidify her vision and message. The final result is a beautiful, one-of-kind Flipside leotard that can be worn anywhere, to the gym or out on the town by pairing it with pants or a skirt!
